Built around 1760 as stables to accommodate the coach horses, The Old Stables was converted to a home in 1974 with large generously proportioned rooms.

... IN THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND

Set in the heart of the Weald of Kent, the peaceful hamlet of Wissenden enjoys great views across the beautiful Kent countryside. Wissenden is a farming community with the most wonderful footpath walks across the fields and through woodland to the charming old villages of Smarden, Pluckley and Bethersden - all within 2 or 3 miles. All three villages have typically English pubs serving good food and beer.

It is also an ideal area from which to explore local villages by bicycle. Although very definitely "off the beaten track" we are only 35 minutes from the Channel Tunnel (Le Shuttle) terminal at Folkestone.

We are about 6 miles from Junction 9 on the M20 together with Ashford International station convenient for hourly trains to London Charing Cross and for Eurostar trains to the Continent. If you plan to stay with us you will need a car or bicycles, or of course, you could use taxis.

The Old Stables is a warm and comfortable home and all bedrooms have extra long or king size beds, coffee and tea making facilities and colour television if you require it. Children are warmly welcomed here and we have a large garden and plenty of private parking available.

Our excellent butcher provides us with locally reared meat, game and poultry. We grow practically all our own vegetables and excellent free range eggs are supplied by neighbours, and we make our own bread. We are therefore able to offer our guests good quality food in relaxed and informal surroundings.

Dinner (for those who want it) is served in the Dining Room, as is breakfast, but if the weather is warm enough either can be eaten on the terrace.

It is possible to enjoy Kent without having to spend a lot of money. For example there are wonderful walks both inland and coastal, a huge variety of churches and very old villages and towns to visit, some of which charge nothing, or only nominally, for entrance to their museums. Many of these towns have weekly markets and farmers' markets, and your journey takes you through the famous Hop Gardens and Orchards of the Weald.

Tenterden, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury are all accessible together with other Cinque Port towns of Sandwich, Rye, Hastings and Battle all offering the chance to explore their streets and sights. Many Houses, Gardens and Castles are close by, such as the Leeds Castle, set on two islands on the River Len . We list some of these on our PLACES TO VISIT & THINGS TO DO page.
